Shelby Steele Biography
Shelby Steele is the Hoover Institution's Robert J. and Marion E. Oster Senior Fellow. He focuses on racial relations, diversity, and affirmative action. In 1994, he was named a Hoover fellow. Steele has written extensively about race in American culture and the effects of modern social programs on racial relations. Steele was awarded the Bradley Prize in 2006 for his contributions to the study of race in America. He received the National Humanities Medal in 2004. In 1991, his work on the documentary Seven Days in Bensonhurst earned him an Emmy Award as well as two television documentary writing awards: the Writers Guild Award and the San Francisco Film Festival Award. Steele won the National Book Critics Circle Award in general nonfiction for his book The Content of Our Character: A New Vision of Race in America in 1990. Steele's other works include A Bound Man: Why We're Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win (Free Press, 2007), White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era (HarperCollins, 2006), and A Dream Deferred: America's Second Betrayal of Black Freedom. Steele has written frequently for major newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He is a Harper's magazine contributing editor. He has also addressed hundreds of groups and appeared on national news shows such as Nightline and 60 Minutes. Steele is a member of the National Association of Scholars, the American Academy for Liberal Education's national board, the University Accreditation Association, and the Manhattan Institute's Center for the New American Community's national board. Steele has a PhD in English from the University of Utah, an MA in sociology from Southern Illinois University, and a BA in political science from Cedar Rapids' Coe College.
