About Shel Horowitz
Shel Horowitz Biography
Shel Horowitz has been active in environmental and social change movements his whole life, beginning with a one-toddler campaign against smoking at his parents' party when he was approximately three years old. He was 15 years old when he joined a neighborhood organization that opposed a nuclear power facility proposed two miles north of New York City (a proposal that the utility company quickly withdrew). His first book, published while he was only 22 and a veteran of the 1977 Seabrook occupation, was on why nuclear power makes no sense. Shel is also the author of the e-book Painless Green: 111 Tips to Help the Environment, Lower Your Carbon Footprint, Cut Your Budget, and Improve Your Quality of Life-Without Changing Your Way of Life. He was personally responsible for the first nonsmokers' rights laws in Northampton, Massachusetts, as well as the defeat of a massive and unsuitable mountainside development in his present hometown of Hadley, Massachusetts. His Down to Business webzine was one of the first to include a regular segment on sustainability. Shel was only a teenager when he began handling PR and marketing for grass-roots community organizations with little advertising budget. Because there was no money for stamps, he used to hand-deliver news releases on a three-speed bicycle. He became aware of the power of the news media as a journalist when a local daily refused to post meeting notifications he drafted for a contentious group"but provided substantial news attention to its rejection. For over two decades, he has assisted companies, organizations, and community groups in getting their message out to the public with little or no cost. Shel had to confront his own employment history after graduating from Antioch College at the age of 19: not just writing and marketing/PR, but also radio, teaching, arts, food service, office systems, community organizing, and environmental problems. Creating his initial rsums led to a new professional path: rsum writing and career services. Shel immediately discovered he had the capacity to identify a job candidate's top skills and present them in such a way that those strengths are highlighted while flaws are minimized. In summary, he made resume writing a marketing function. He returned to New York City to work as a manuscript reader at two literary agencies before becoming a VISTA Volunteer community organizer with the Gray Panthers for a year and a half. On the side, he pursued poetry and became quite prominent in the New York open poetry scene, where he met Dina Friedman during an open reading in Greenwich Village. The two departed New York in 1980, spending a year in Philadelphia before settling in Western Massachusetts in 1981"and starting Accurate Writing More with a $12 marketing budget and a total start-up cost of less than $200. (most of it for a 13-year-old IBM Selectric typewriter). Two years later, they married. Alana was born in 1987, the same year Dina joined the company, and Rafael was born in 1992. Shel began marketing his own firm locally, drawing on the marketing skills he learned in and after college, and expanded it to be the largest of its kind in a three-county service region. He wrote the first of six books on low-cost, high-impact marketing in 1985. He gradually broadened his practice to include marketing for other businesses and organizations. He began utilizing e-mail as a marketing tool in 1994, launched his first website in 1996, and soon established a worldwide reputation as a brilliant copywriter and marketing strategist who understands how to get the most of a marketing dollar. His customer list currently includes accounts in Europe, Asia, and all across the United States; his books have sold in dozens of countries and been
