Sheila Marcelo Biography

Sheila was inspired to launch Care.com by her personal and professional experiences. Sheila was pushed to find excellent care solutions as a young mother with two little children who also became part of the "sandwich generation" caring for her parents at a young age. She realized her family's predicament was not unique and that there had to be a better answer than the yellow pages. With a background in technology, she realized this was the answer and established Care.com in 2006. With over 17.8 million members across 16 countries, the firm is now the world's largest online destination for finding and managing family care. Sheila's interest in technology grew throughout her tenure as a management consultant and Harvard Business School teaching fellow. Her developing enthusiasm for the potential of technology to help people solve real-world issues led her to Upromise, where she was VP of Product Management and Marketing for the college savings program, and then to executive search engine TheLadders.com, where she was VP and General Manager. Following TheLadders.com, she worked as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Matrix Partners, where she created the Care.com business plan. Sheila has received numerous accolades as Care.com has grown and scaled, including being named one of the "Top 10 Women Entrepreneurs" at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit (2009) and Fortune Magazine (2014), being the youngest recipient of the Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award (2014), and being bestowed one of the highest honors for Filipinos, the Filipino Heritage Award or Pamana ng Pilipino from President Benigno Aquino III of the Philipines. Sheila is also a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute (Class of 2012), a Marshall Memorial Fellow (Class of 2011), and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (Class of 2011). Sheila is a member of the Philippine Development Foundation's Board of Trustees, a non-profit organization that collaborates with the Philippine government on educational, innovation, and entrepreneurial programs. She also serves on the Advisory Board for the Harvard Business School Rock 100 Entrepreneurs Summit and serves as an advisor to various start-up businesses. Sheila launched WomenUp.org in 2010 with the goal of increasing women's involvement in the global economy via leadership training, mentorship, and support for girls and women at all stages of their lives and professions. Sheila has spoken with President Obama at the White House Summit on Working Families (2014), with global political and business leaders at The World Economic Forum (2013, 2015), and to rising female leaders at Harvard University (2013) and CEOs at Northeastern University (2013). Sheila got her B.A. in Economics from Mount Holyoke College and her J.D. and M.B.A. from Harvard University, both with honors and the Dean's Award.
