Sheila E. Biography

She is the daughter of percussionist Pete Escovedo, with whom she collaborates regularly. She made her professional debut with jazz musician George Duke. She is a fantastic drummer, percussionist, and violinist. By the time she was in her early twenties, she had worked with Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, and Diana Ross. Escovedo is of Mexican and African American descent. Despite being taken under Prince's wing, she established herself as a first-rate artist in her own right. In 1984, she had hits with The Glamorous Life (#7 on the Hot 100 and considered a '80s classic), The Belle Of St. Mark (#34), and A Love Bizarre (#11). Sheila E. was nominated for an American Music Award and a Grammy for her album The Glamorous Life, and she opened for Prince on his massively successful Purple Rain Tour in 1984. During the 1980s, Sheila released three albums: The Glamorous Life Romance 1600, Sheila E., and Sheila E. She participated in two films: Krush Groove alongside Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Blair Underwood in 1985, and Prince's concert film Sign 'O' the Times in 1987. Not long after her departure, she worked as Prince's drummer and musical director in his highly respected backing band nicknamed the New Power Generation during the Sign 'O' the Times and Lovesexy periods of his career. She also worked as a composer and guitarist on several of Prince's tracks, as well as his prot�g�s' albums such as Madhouse. Sheila released a couple additional albums after leaving the Prince group in 1989, including Sex Cymbal Writes of Passage and Heaven. However, she was unable to promote Sex Cymbal due to a significant health situation at the time, and the album received minimal notice.
