Shani Mootoo Biography

Shani Mootoo, a novelist, visual artist, and video producer, was born in 1957 to Trinidadian parents in Dublin, Ireland. She spent her formative years in Trinidad before relocating to Vancouver, British Columbia, when she was 24. Currently, she resides in Toronto, Canada. Early on, Mootoo showed an aptitude for drawing and writing, expressing joy as he developed into a craftsman at age ten. Her mother, Indra (née Samaroo), gave her early initiative motivation. Ramesh Mootoo, Shani Mootoo's father, was a Trinidadian government official and a clinical family specialist. She studied subjects of sex, sexuality, and race in her paintings, photographs, and recordings while residing in Vancouver and New York City between 1994 and 1999.
