Shane Windmeyer Biography

Shane L. Windmeyer remembers his "coming out" as being challenging, terrifying, isolating, emotionally complex, and yet freeing - all at once - at a small rural university in Kansas. His dedication to LGBT problems stems from his inner fortitude, desire to support those coming out today, and desire to inspire college students—gay and straight—to confront prejudice, bigotry, and hatred against all people. Windmeyer is an advocate for LGBT problems on college campuses and a national leader in the fight for gay and lesbian civil rights. To make college campuses safer for LGBT students, he founded and serves as executive director of Campus Pride, the only national organization for student leaders and campus organizations. The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, written by Windmeyer and published in the fall of 2006, is the first college guide to feature the "100 Best LGBT-Friendly Campuses." For his groundbreaking work with the Lambda 10 Project - National Clearinghouse for GLBT Fraternity & Sorority Issues, Windmeyer is frequently best recognized. Out on Fraternity Row: Personal Accounts of Being Gay in a College Fraternity, his first book, is the only one of its kind and a national bestseller. His second book, Secret Sisters: Stories of Being Lesbian & Bisexual in a College Sorority, was published due to his leadership with the Lambda 10 Project. His third book, Inspiration for LGBT Students & Their Allies, was released by Collegiate Empowerment Company, Inc. in October 2002. Brotherhood: Gay Life in College Fraternities, a much-awaited sequel that Windmeyer edited, was released in October 2005. Additionally, Windmeyer is the program coordinator for Stop The Hate, a national initiative to eliminate bias and hate crimes. In collaboration with the Association of College Unions International, the Anti-Defamation League, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, and the Higher Education Center's Drug, Alcohol, and Other Violence Prevention Programs, he led and developed this train the trainer initiative in 2001. In addition to being highlighted on IN THE LIFE TV, Rolling Stone, TIME, The New York Times, and MSNBC's The Situation with Tucker Carlson have all featured Windmeyer's work. National publications, including OUT Magazine, The Advocate National Gay & Lesbian News Magazine, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Indianapolis Star, Salon Magazine, HERO Magazine, U. Magazine, and the Chronicle of Higher Education, have highlighted his educational activities. Windmeyer earned a bachelor's degree in communication from Emporia State University and a master's degree in higher education and student affairs administration from Indiana University. He resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.
