He had a rural Montana upbringing as a youngster, which presented him with several challenges as he got older and struggled with his character. The following year saw Shane discouraged, confused, and frustrated. Finally, he decided he needed to make a plan to show Tom respect and what had happened, and how they may avoid a similar accident in the wake of an unexpected disaster. Shane uploaded a YouTube video titled It Could Happen to You, the anniversary of Tom's death. The video gained overnight fame online and has received over 20 million views on YouTube and other internet-based platforms. GLAAD selected one as one of the Most Inspiring Videos That Helped Advance Equality. According to Entertainment Weekly, the ad played a significant role in the campaign for nationwide marriage equality in 2015.
