Shami Chakrabarti Biography

Since September 2003, Shami Chakrabarti has served as Liberty's director (The National Council for Civil Liberties). On September 10th, 2001, Shami became an In-House Counsel for Liberty. She got deeply involved in the organization's participation in the "War on Terror" and the defense and advancement of human rights principles in Parliament, the Courts, and broader society. She was a barrister by training and was admitted to the Bar in 1994. From 1996 to 2001, she served as a lawyer at the Home Office, representing the governments of both parties. She has written, lectured, and broadcast extensively on the value of the post-World War II human rights framework as a crucial element of democratic society since taking on the role of Liberty's Director. She holds the positions of Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University, Governor of the British Film Institute and the London School of Economics, and Visiting Fellow and Master of the Bench at Middle Temple.
