She gained notoriety for her starring role as Amy Juergens in the ABC Family adaptation of The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008–2013). Woodley made her feature film debut in Alexander Payne's 2011 comedy-drama The Descendants before starring in the transitional movie The Spectacular Now (2013). She received a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture Golden Globe Award for the first and the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Dramatic Acting for the latter. She received further recognition for her starring roles as a high school cancer patient in the dramatic series The Fault in Our Stars (2014) and as Beatrice Tris Prior in the science fiction movie The Divergent Series (2014–2016). She began appearing in the HBO drama Big Little Lies in 2017 as a rape survivor, for which she was nominated for both a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.
