Hersh began his career in journalism as a police journalist for the Chicago City News Bureau. He worked for a small-town newspaper while in the Army, then for UPI and AP until late 1967, when he joined Eugene J. McCarthy's presidential campaign as a speechwriter and press secretary. Hersh began working in Washington and New York for The New York Times in 1972. He left the newspaper in 1979 and has since worked as a freelance columnist, making two six-month visits on unusual assignments to the Times's Washington bureau.
