Sergio Aragonés Biography

Currently, Sergio Aragonés is thought to be the world's fastest sketch artist. He is unquestionably the most well-known in the industry. He receives every major award, including the Will Eisner Hall of Fame Award and the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society. He was born in Castellon, Spain, in 1937, but his family soon moved to Mexico due to the Spanish Civil War. Sergio had his long-term education in Mexico, where he studied architecture at the University of Mexico and also studied mime under the direction of Alexandro Jodorowsky. Whatever the case, he continuously had a passion for cartooning, a skill he discovered in the third grade to the amusement of his peers and the annoyance of his teachers. He contributed to class papers and everywhere else he could have his illustrations printed, and at the age of 17, he began skillfully selling to a broad range of Mexican outlets. He maintained a weekly slot in Maana Magazine for more than ten years. Finally, he decided to try out his karma in America in 1962 and arrived in New York with just $20 and an envelope containing his animation work. He had trouble getting employment right away, and the products he sold didn't pay enough, so he had to take on temporary gigs as a singer or artist in Greenwich Village cafes. Things began to shift when he mustered the mental strength to go towards the leading market for absurd images, Mad Magazine. He went to their headquarters and asked for Antonio Prohias, the Cuban refugee who garnered their most significant "Spy Vs. Spy" feature, feeling humiliated by his poor English. Sergio assumed that Prohias would be able to translate for him. Still, he was mistaken: Prohias, delighted to meet a fellow Hispanic visual artist, spoke even less English than Sergio did. He talked about his new "sibling," and the Mad editors were impressed.
