When Senator Edmund S. Muskie withdrew to accept the position of secretary of state in 1980, Representative George J. Mitchell was appointed to complete his term. Before the 1982 election, Senator Mitchell was 36 places behind in surveys of popular opinion. Sixty-one percent of the total votes voted for him after his astonishing victory against an impending defeat. Representative Mitchell had a long and illustrious career in the Senate, lasting 14 years. With 81 percent of the vote in 1988, the most significant margin of victory in Maine history, he was reappointed. He was elected to the Senate in the more substantial part in January 1989.
