The bestselling author of the books Abundance, Ahab's Wife, Four Spirits, and most recently, Adam and Eve is Sena Jeter Naslund (William Morrow). Her fiction has appeared in publications, including The Paris Review. Tennessee Review Review of Iowa, The Michigan Quarterly Review, The Indiana Review, and The Alaska Quarterly Review, where she received the Lawrence Prize in fiction. She has received honors from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Kentucky Arts Council. Naslund was born in Birmingham, Alabama, where her mother taught music and her father practiced medicine. In high school, her talent as a cello gained her a berth in the Alabama Pops Orchestra and a scholarship to attend the University of Alabama, which she declined to study composition at Birmingham-Southern College. An English instructor who saw Naslund there helped arrange for her to attend the Breadloaf Writers Conference. After leaving Birmingham-Southern, she received recognition from the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa, where she earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in experimental writing. She worked at the University of Montana in 1971 as a visiting professor in the M.F.A. program. The following year, she recognized her current job as the exploratory writing program coordinator at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. She also received praise as the school's former Distinguished Teaching Professor.
