Her youth was typical for a promising young girl growing up in the South. Sela Ward studied art and public relations as her undergraduate at the University of Alabama. Sela was also a football team booster, a sorority sister, and the homecoming queen. Sela Ward moved to New York with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in hand to pursue a career in public relations. Still, when the attractive, elegant brunette was persuaded to become a model, she decided to give showcasing a go. Sela appeared in T.V. advertisements for products like Pepsi and Maybelline while currently on the other side of the advertising spectrum as a Wilhelmina Model. After becoming involved with more than 20 advertisements, Sela stopped doing publicity and relocated to Los Angeles to become an artist and increase her screen time. Sela Ward made her television debut in the 1983 series Emerald Point N.A.S. She also starred opposite Burt Reynolds in The Man Who Loved Women that year, which aided her ascent. Sela was performing the T.V. adjustments for films like Nothing In Common, Steele Justice, and Hello Again, and television programs like L.A. Law Night Court and Cameo By Night. Sela Ward was cast as one of four sisters in the N.B.C. parody/dramatization Sisters in 1991, giving Sela her big break. Teddy Reed, a drunken mother and pioneer of fashion, Sela, became a name many of the show's viewers knew quickly. Sela also won the Emmy in 1994 for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Sela Ward had a dual role while playing Teddy; in addition to appearing in the made-for-TV movies Double Jeopardy Killer Rules and Almost Golden: The Jessica Savitch Story, for which she won the Cable Ace Award for Best Actress in a Movie or Miniseries, she also played the title role.
