He used to be thought of as a writer who published novels sporadically, but lately, his fiction writing has been more successful than his work in the theatre. His books A Long Way (2005) and The Secret Scripture (2008), the latter of which won the 2008 Costa Book of the Year and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, have both been nominated for the Man Booker Prize. On Canaan's Side, his 2011 book, made the Booker long list. Without End received the Costa Book of the Year award in January 2017, making Barry the first author to receive the prestigious award twice.
