Speedman was born in London, England, to Scottish parents Roy Speedman, a chain store buyer, and Mary Campbell, a competitive sprinter, and teacher. He and his family relocated to Toronto, Ontario, when he was four. He was a dedicated swimmer who participated in the now-defunct skilled competitor program at Earl Haig High School.
Speedman placed seventh as an individual swimmer for the Canada Junior National Swim Team in the 1992 Olympic preliminary competition, Shortly after leaving the game due to a neck injury. Speedman became passionate about acting to find another area of focus outside of games.
