Scott Nelson was raised in the Florida town of Sanford. He obtained a Ph.D. in American History from the University of North Carolina in 1995 after working as a system engineer and instructor in Toronto, Ontario, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, respectively, as well as a bookshop table attendant. He teaches American History from the nineteenth century as the Legum Professor of History at the College of William & Mary. Nelson is a kind, witty, and approachable educator. He has spoken in front of sizable crowds on four landmasses, recalling locations like Toronto, Paris, London, and Hong Kong. His first book, Iron Confederacies, chronicled the operations of the Southern Railway, the first multi-divisional cooperation in History.
