About Scott Parazynski
Scott Parazynski Biography
Dr. Scott Parazynski has lived and traveled extensively, having attended high school and a large portion of his formative years in Athens, Greece; Tehran, Iran; Dakar, Senegal; and Beirut, Lebanon. He received his education at Stanford University and Stanford Medical School before pursuing emergency and trauma treatment training at Harvard and Denver. Dr. Parazynski is a specialist in human adaptability to harsh conditions and has published much on space physiology. He was chosen to join NASA's Astronaut Corps in 1992, flew five Space Shuttle missions, and did seven spacewalks (EVAs). He held various high leadership positions over his 17 years as an astronaut, including EVA Branch Head and Lead Astronaut for Space Shuttle Thermal Protection System Inspection & Repair (in the aftermath of the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy). The first combined US-Russian spacewalk was led by STS-86 while docked to the Russian space station Mir. Senator John Glenn's crewmate and "personal physician" duties were performed during STS-95. On STS-100, EVA construction of the Canadian-built space station arm was completed. Dr. Parazynski did 4 EVAs while leading the EVA team on STS-120, a problematic space station assembly trip, in October 2007. (becoming only the second astronaut to perform four EVAs on a single Space Shuttle mission). Many consider the fourth and final EVA one of the hardest and riskiest tasks. He was placed during the EVA 90 feet out from the protection of their airlock, further than any astronaut in orbit had ever gone. He had to fix a solar array wing that was ultimately charged during this EVA. The enormous coordinated effort by Mission Control and other engineering professionals in space and on Earth has been compared to the "Apollo 13 moment" of the Space Shuttle and Space Station era. Dr. Parazynski has spent more than eight weeks in space overall, including more than 47 hours on spacewalks. He has been in orbit for nearly 23 million miles yet has yet to accumulate even one frequent flyer mile! Scott was admitted into the US Astronaut Hall of Fame at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in May 2016.
