The first step to the Olympics is to have a dream, which is then fulfilled by dedication, penance, diligence, and the ability to go above and beyond what other people are willing to accomplish. After only 15 months of rigorous training, Scott Mercier was selected for the 1992 US Olympic Cycling Team in Barcelona. He then began a journey that would take him worldwide as a skilled rider. Finally, he was presented with a Faustian choice: continue to pursue his fantasy while atoning for his moral failings or depart. Above all, Scott is a husband, father, and friend. He writes a bicycle piece for the Aspen Times and works as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch in his spare time. He also speaks at open forums for small restaurant organizations. Scott graduated from Telluride High School as the top student in his class of 13, received a degree in economics from UC Berkeley, and is working towards a master's degree in finance from the Harvard University Extension School. He was the first Olympian from Telluride, Colorado, to address Team USA in 1992 at the Barcelona Games. From 1993 to 1997, he competed as a professional cyclist and finished his career as a member of the infamous U.S. Postal Services Cycling Team. He resides in Basalt, Colorado, with the daughter and kid of his significant other.
