Rapper and composer Saweetie is from Hayward, California. Her first song, Icy Grl, was a success, and Warner Bros. Records signed her as a result. High Maintenance, her debut EP for a big label, was released in March 2018. In 2016, Saweetie started sharing rap videos on her Instagram page. She rapped in one video over the melody from Khia's legendary song My Neck, My Back (Lick It), which would later become Icy Grl. She originally shared the song on SoundCloud in the summer of 2017, and in October of the same year, she made a music video for it. The Internet sensation's video eventually received 10 million views on YouTube as of March 2017. Following that, Saweetie released a freestyle rap called High Maintenance in the same month along with a little video of her delivering a verse to the song. Additionally, it would become popular on Twitter and Instagram. Focus, a song she released in October 2017, using a sample of DRAM's Gilligan. She was selected as one of Pigeons & Planes' Best New Artists of the Month in January 2018 as well as Tidal's Artist of the Week. She was shown in a Super Bowl LII commercial for Rihanna's cosmetic line, Fenty Beauty, in February 2018. She partnered with her own company, Icy Records, to sign with Warner Bros. Records that month.
