Sarah Lewis Biography

Sarah Lewis is a Harvard University Du Bois Fellow and an expert in social history. She is the author of The Rise: Creativity the Gift of Failure and the Search for Mastery (Simon and Schuster), a complex, narrative-driven examination of how advancement revelation and creative advancement are strongly influenced by information gleaned from the fantastical, the impossibly difficult, and even disappointment. She has held positions as a trustee at Creative Time, the CUNY Graduate Center, the Brearley School, and the Andy Warhol Visual Arts Foundation, in addition to serving on President Obama's Arts Policy Council. She has also held curatorial positions at Tate Modern in London and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her third work, which Harvard University Press is now publishing, focused on photography's role in exposing the myths surrounding racial categorizations. In addition, she has released essays on race, contemporary art, and culture in several journals, including The New Yorker, Artforum, Art in America, and distributions for the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, and Rizzoli. She attended Harvard University for her four years of college, Oxford University for her M. Phil., and Yale University for her Ph.D. (expected Fall 2014). She divides her time between Cambridge, Massachusetts, and New York.
