About Sarah Culberson
Sarah Culberson Biography
In Morgantown, West Virginia, Sarah Culberson was created by a white mother and a Black father. A loving white family adopted her in West Virginia after being abandoned as a newborn and placed in foster care. She spent her childhood debating and coping with issues related to her identity and her mixed heritage. Early on, she developed a love for the theatre and eventually received a West Virginia University acting scholarship. After receiving her MFA from The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, she entered the Los Angeles acting scene. Culberson has performed in theatre, movies, and television. She had guest appearances on Boston Legal, Strong Medicine, All of Us, The Hidden Life of the American Teenager, and the movie American Dreamz, among other television programs. She also performs as a guest dancer with the renowned Contra-Tiempo Urban Latin Dance Theater. Yet, her decision to track her biological parents was her most significant contribution. She discovered that her father resided in a hamlet in Sierra Leone, West Africa, after learning that her birth mother had passed away when she was just 11 years old. She discovered that she was a princess from a royal family, a Mahaloi, the granddaughter of a Paramount Chief. She also became aware of the hardships and suffering that the people of Sierra Leone had to endure due to a vicious 11-year civil war that concluded in 2002. Learning about her unique history and how she reacted to her irrevocably altered her life. Currently, she and several others fight to enhance young people's education, deliver clean drinking water to the neighborhood, and give the people of Sierra Leone sustainable opportunities as co-founder and president of The Kposowa Foundation in Los Angeles. The Singapore News, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, BBC radio, NPR, "Oprah and Friends" radio show, and publications including Reader's Digest, Newsweek, People, and Glamour have all published articles about Culberson's tale. She has been on CNN, Inside Edition, Good Morning America, and other shows. The St. Martin's Press book A Princess Found, co-written by Culberson and Tracy Trivas, was released in 2009 and is now utilized in a Pepperdine University ethnic identification course. It is available at Barnes & Noble and other bookshops. Sarah Culberson is the director of the service learning at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and also works to increase awareness of Sierra Leone. She arranges for groups to stay with her family in Sierra Leone while working on various service-learning initiatives. The groups collaborate on projects with the Bumpe community while learning about Sierra Leone's people and culture. Speaking nationally and internationally, Culberson tells the inspiring story of how she found her biological father in a war-torn nation that is recovering and making progress.
