Sarah Chayes is well-known worldwide for her original ideas about corruption and its effects. Her research examines how blatant crime may contribute to the emergence of crises such as terrorist revolutions, their bloody fallout, and environmental destruction. Before joining Carnegie, Chayes worked as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen's assistant.
She concentrated on governance concerns, participating in cabinet-level decisions about Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Arab Spring, and regularly visiting these places with Mullen. After spending ten years in Afghanistan, Chayes was selected for the position after serving as a special adviser to two ISAF commanders.
