Brightman, who was born on August 14, 1960, in Berkhampstead, England, began dancing at the age of three and had her London theatrical debut 10 years later in Charles Strouse's I and Albert. She was a dancer on the television show Pan's People in 1976, and subsequently fronted the pop group Hot Gossip, which had a number one success in the United Kingdom with the tune I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper in 1978. She was cast in the part of Jemima in Lloyd Webber's Cats in 1981, and it was there that she met the composer, who divorced his first wife to marry her in 1984. Brightman originated the character of Christine Daa? in Phantom and also appeared in Requiem and Aspects of Love during their relationship, which lasted until 1990; after their divorce, she toured in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Music: A Concert Spectacular. Brightman released a series of solo albums between 1988 and 1998, including The Trees They Grow So High, 1989's The Songs That Got Away, 1990's As I Come of Age, 1993's Dive, 1995's Fly, and 1998's Eden. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, as well as The Songs That Got Away, were released the next year, featuring some of her best moments from Lloyd Webber's cast recordings.
