Sara N. Ortwein Biography

After receiving a bachelor of science in civil engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1980, Sara Ortwein joined Exxon as a drilling engineer. She has held a variety of technical, operational, and planning positions during her career in the upstream oil and gas industry. She worked in New Orleans, Midland, and Houston while holding several positions within Exxon's American production operations. Afterward, she worked at Exxon Ventures, CIS, as the reservoir appraisal and planning manager, where she was responsible for new venture capture in Russia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. Sara served as reservoir engineering manager after the 1999 ExxonMobil merger and was accountable for producing reservoir engineering globally. She worked as the upstream director's adviser at the company's corporate headquarters in Irving, Texas, from 2001 to 2003. In 2004, she was appointed production manager for U.S. Production, overseeing all ExxonMobil-run production facilities in the country. Sara presently serves as the ExxonMobil Development Company's vice president of engineering. She is crucial in guaranteeing the technical caliber of the engineering work that underpins the company's international initiatives in this capacity. She oversees hiring, training, and assigning engineers within ExxonMobil Development Company. Sara is a member of the ExxonMobil Corporate Initiative on Women's Economic Opportunity advisory council, which promotes the development of female business leaders and entrepreneurs, lowers barriers to women's economic participation, and aids in the global identification and deployment of enabling technologies. Sara was admitted into the Academy of Outstanding Alumni of the Department of Civil, Architecture, and Environmental Engineering in 2008. She is a member of the Chancellor's Council for The University of Texas System and has supported Friends of Alec since 1986.
