In 1954, I was born in Chicago, the third and only daughter in a family of seven. I received my bachelor's degree in English from the Loyola University of Chicago and my master's degree in English from the University of Iowa (M.F.A. Creative Writing 1978).
I've worked as a high school dropout counselor, a college recruiter, an arts administrator, and a visiting writer at a variety of colleges, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
