In the late 1962 films Oh Dad Poor Dad Mama's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sorry, Sam Waterston made his New York debut at the Phoenix Theater. The musical was on a nationwide tour with him until it was transferred to Broadway in August 1963. The following ten years saw Waterston in a lot of plays.

In addition to playing the hippy son of a grumpy English general in Halfway Up the Tree, the Indian spokesperson John Grass in Arthur Kopit's Indians, and the son in a production of Noël Coward's 1925 comedy Hay Fever, Waterston amassed a long list of other notable roles on Broadway.
