In the late 1962 films Oh Dad Poor Dad Mama's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sorry, Sam Waterston made his New York debut at the Phoenix Theater. The musical was on a nationwide tour with him until it was transferred to Broadway in August 1963. The following ten years saw Waterston in a lot of plays. In addition to playing the hippy son of a grumpy English general in Halfway Up the Tree, the Indian spokesperson John Grass in Arthur Kopit's Indians, and the son in a production of Noël Coward's 1925 comedy Hay Fever, Waterston amassed a long list of other notable roles on Broadway. At the New York Shakespeare Festival in the middle of 1972, Waterston played Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and Laertes in Hamlet. Notwithstanding the negative feedback on his performance of Laertes, he continued to read Shakespeare. The role of Benedick in A.J. Antoon's production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park, which eventually transferred to Broadway, earned him the most critical acclaim in 1972. Waterston won an Obie, a Drama Desk Award, and the New York Drama Critics Circle awards for his performance.
