Rutigliano, the son of immigrants, attended Tennessee and Tulsa for college football. Before getting an NFL assistant coaching job with the Denver Broncos in 1967, he coached at the high school level in New York and at the college level in Connecticut, Maryland, and Tennessee. Over the following 11 years, he would serve as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints until being named head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 1978.
