Rockwell decided to go to New York permanently and pursue acting after receiving a role in the 1988 television movie Clownhouse. With his eccentric portrayal in Tom DeCillo's festival favorite Box of Moonlight in 1996, when he played a bonkers backwoods hermit who aids in the spiritual awakening of stuffy engineer John Turturro, his career indeed took off. He won Best Actor awards for his performance at the Catalan International Film Festival and the Montreal World Film Festival. Before appearing on stage for a two-and-a-half-month run in a production of Mike Nichols' dark comedy Goose Pimples, he followed up with a pair of funny mob-gone-wrong comedies in 1998, Jerry and Tom and Safe Guys.
