Salima Ikram Biography

When Dr. Salima Ikram traveled to Egypt at nine, she fell in love with the nation's history and monuments. At Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, she studied Egyptology and Archaeology and graduated with an A.B. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology and History. In addition, she received training in faunal analysis while pursuing her doctorate. While residing in Cairo, Dr. Ikram instructs Egyptology and archaeology courses at the American University of Cairo. Dr. Ikram has done a lot of work in Egypt. She worked as an archaeologist and site supervisor on the Akhenaten Temple Project at Buto in the Delta and the Giza plateau, adjacent to Karnak Temple. In addition, she has experience working as an archaeologist and a faunal analyst abroad, including at Dahshur Gebel el-Haridi Sakkara Tall al Muqdam KV 10 KV 5. Salima's job as a faunal analyst for the Theban Mapping Project entails classifying and evaluating the hundreds of animal bones discovered in KV 5. While she has determined that some of the bones are those of meat sacrifices, many are those of wild animals that may have wandered inside the tomb and perished after becoming lost in its several chambers.
