Russell Jeung Biography

Stanford University awarded Dr. Russell Jeung a BA in human biology and an MA in education. He served in China and the San Francisco Mayor's Office before earning his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. He moved to the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University in 2002 after spending two years as an instructor at Foothill College. Family Sacrifices: The Worldviews and Ethics of Chinese Americans, Moving Movers: Student Activism and the Emergence of Asian American Studies, and many other works are written by Dr. Jeung. At Home in Exile: Finding Jesus among My Ancestors and Refugee Neighbors, Sustaining Faith Traditions: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion Among the Latino and Asian American Second Generation, and Faithful Generations: Race and New Asian American Churches are a few books that address these issues. Additionally, he co-produced The Oak Park Story (2010), a documentary about a historic housing battle involving his fellow Cambodian and Latino residents, with Valerie Soe. His areas of interest in sociology include social movements, sociology of religion, and sociology of race. In doing community-based, participatory research with Asian American communities, Dr. Jeung actively involves his students. An initiative of the Chinese for Affirmative Action, the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council, and SF State Asian American Studies Stop AAPI Hate was introduced by Dr. Jeung in 2020. In order to provide community resources and legislative measures to combat racism, it records prejudice connected to Covid-19.
