Roseanne Cherrie Barr is an American actress, comedian, writer, television producer, and director who ran for President of the Peace and Freedom Party in California in 2012. Barr started her career doing stand-up comedy in bars before landing the part of Roseanne in the sitcom Roseanne. From 1988 through 1997, the program was a success, lasting nine seasons. For her role in the program, she received an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. In the eight years leading up to her sitcom, Barr had developed a furious working-class domestic goddess character and wanted to present a genuine program about a powerful mother who was not a victim of patriarchal materialism. Barr was the oldest of four children in a working-class Jewish Salt Lake City family and was engaged in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was the granddaughter of immigrants from Europe and Russia. She married Bill Pentland in 1974 and had three children with him before separating and dating comedian Tom Arnold for four years in 1990. When she sang The Star-Spangled Banner off-key during a nationally televised baseball game in 1990, she sparked outrage by grasping her crotch and spitting. She went on to host her own talk show, The Roseanne Show, from 1998 to 2000, after her sitcom ended. With a globe tour in 2005, she returned to stand-up comedy. In 2011, she appeared in Roseanne's Nuts, an unscripted TV show about her life on a Hawaiian farm that aired from July through September of that year. Barr launched her candidacy for the Green Party's presidential nomination in early 2012. Barr was defeated by Jill Stein for the Democratic presidential nomination. Barr then ran for the Peace and Freedom Party's presidential candidacy, which she won on August 4, 2012. Barr garnered 61,971 votes in the main election, ranking her sixth overall.
