Rory Gardiner Biography

Rory Gardiner is an Australian-born architectural photographer who is known for his evocative, analog-driven imagery that captures the soul of modern and contemporary architecture. Gardiner was born in Melbourne to an architect father and so he developed an early appreciation for the built environment. He studied photography at RMIT University before moving to London where he started his career with a commission for Tate Modern. His work has been published in top publications such as Wallpaper, Domus, Architectural Digest and The Architectural Review. 

Gardiner has worked with architects such as David Chipperfield, Zaha Hadid and John Pawson. He has photographed important projects all over the world including the Swiss National Museum in Zurich and the Museo Jumex in Mexico City.  

Gardiner uses medium-format film cameras to create his work which is characterized by a soft, muted palette and a focus on the interplay of light and shadow. His approach emphasizes the tactile experience of photography, allowing for a meditative and intentional process that captures the essence of architectural spaces.

Gardiner divides his time between Melbourne and London and continues to influence the field of architectural photography with his unique perspective and dedication to the craft.
