Ronn Lucas Biography

Lucas attended Eastwood High School in El Paso, Texas, and graduated in 1972. Jimmy Nelson and his doll Danny O'Day on the old Texaco Star Theater were among the ventriloquists who inspired him. Lucas got his own Danny O'Day to mail-order when he was just seven years old. Lucas was able to communicate without moving his mouth by the age of ten. In El Paso, Texas, he began his career as a musician at Saint Timothy's Lutheran Church. He began traveling the country at the age of 21. Lucas explained, "I was employed by the Billy the Kid Clothing Company, which was popular in El Paso at the time." "They recruited me to go on a Billy the Kid puppet tour around the country." Despite the fact that the contract was limited to a year, it confirmed Lucas' ambition to work in show business, an area in which he has excelled. On the Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon in September 2004, he earned a standing ovation, and host Jerry Lewis observed, "It doesn't get any better than that." At the ninth annual Vegas Ventriloquist Festival earlier this year, the Smothers Brothers awarded Lucas the Askins Achievement Award. He has garnered several awards for his work, including multiple titles as Las Vegas' top entertainment. He has been in a number of live shows as well as on television. In 1982, he made his national debut by winning the national Laff-Off competition hosted by the Showtime cable network. Lucas has performed six different shows in Las Vegas, Nevada, at five different hotels, the most recent of which was at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, where he signed a five-year agreement in December 2006, however his performance was canceled midway through 2007 for undisclosed reasons. Prior to that, he had a headline gig at the Rio Hotel. From somewhere before 2003 through the fall of 2006, he had a program there. He was the first ventriloquist to have a long-running performance in Vegas history. Lucas has appeared in CBS programs for President Ronald Reagan at the Kennedy Center, President Bill Clinton at Ford's Theatre, and President George W. Bush at Ford's Theatre. He also played for Queen Elizabeth at the London Palladium. In the early 1990s, Lucas had his own U.K. television series for Thames Television called The Ronn Lucas Show, which lasted five years. He was also a semi-regular on the Match Game revival in 1990 and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour revival in 1988. Lucas has also appeared on sitcoms and variety shows such as Night Court, Silk Stalkings, L.A. Law, Nip/Tuck, and The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, America's Funniest Home Videos, Xuxa, and Circus of the Stars. Buffalo Billy, Chuck Roast, and Scorch, the latter of whom featured in his own series Scorch, are among his most often used puppets. He also has a dummy act in which he employs a member of the crowd. Lucas co-authored the book Better Living Through Ventriloquism: How to Say What You Shouldn't And Get What You Want and published a DVD of the Disney Channel special Who's In Charge Here?
