Ronald K.L. Collins Biography
At the University of Washington School of Law, Professor Collins is the Harold S. Shefelman Scholar. He focuses on constitutional law and the First Amendment. He was a scholar at the First Amendment Center in Washington, D.C. before coming to UW in 2010. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a bachelor's degree and a law degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles (law review) (political philosophy). On the Oregon Supreme Court, he clerked for Justice Hans A. Linde and was a Supreme Court Fellow under Chief Justice Warren Burger. Collins was a teaching fellow at Stanford Law School after working at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the Legal Aid Society of Orange County. Following that, he taught constitutional and commercial law at a number of prestigious universities, including George Washington University Law Center and Temple Law School. He is the co-author of We Must Not Be Afraid to Be Free: Stories about Free Speech in America (Oxford University Press, 2011), and the editor of The Fundamental Holmes: A Free Speech Chronicle and Reader (Cambridge University Press, 2010). (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming). The Death of Discourse (2nd ed. 2005) and The Trials of Lenny Bruce are two of his other co-authored publications (2002). He's also the author of The Fundamental Hugo Black: A Free Speech Chronicle and Reader (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming), The Death of Contract (1995), and Constitutional Government in America (all published by Cambridge University Press) (1980). His work has appeared in a number of journals, including the Harvard, Stanford, and Michigan Law Reviews, as well as the Supreme Court Review. In connection with a forthcoming novel and collection of short stories, Collins was named a Norman Mailer Fellow in fiction writing with a residency in Provincetown (Winter, 2010). Professor Collins was honored by the editors of the Washington Law Review in 2012 with the Outstanding Faculty Award. He received an award from the American Society of Legal Writers in 2012 for his book We Must Not Be Afraid to Be Free (co-authored with Sam Chaltain). Professor Collins released three books in 2013: Nuanced Absolutism: Floyd Abrams and the First Amendment, Mania: The Story of the Outraged & Outrageous Lives that Launched a Generation (with David Skover), and On Dissent: It's Meaning in America (all with David Skover) (with Skover).
