Robert D. Kaplan is the chief geopolitical analyst for Stratfor, a private global intelligence company. He has authored 14 books on foreign affairs and travel that have been translated into many languages, including his most recent work, "The Revenge of Geography: What the Map Tells Us About Coming Conflicts and the Battle Against Fate." Kaplan has been a foreign correspondent for The Atlantic for more than 25 years and has been named one of Foreign Policy magazine's Top 100 Global Thinkers. He is a nonresident senior fellow at the Center for New American Security in Washington, D.C. He previously served on the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board under Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Kaplan was also the Class of 1960 Distinguished Visiting Professor in National Security at the United States Naval Academy from 2006 to 2008. His books, including Balkan Ghosts, The Arabists, An Empire Wilderness, and Warrior Politics, have received critical acclaim and have been chosen by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times as notable books of the year.
