Rob McElhenney and struggling actors Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton developed their own TV show concept titled "It's Always Sunny on TV." The show chronicled the foibles of down-and-out, not necessarily likable actors struggling to find work in LA. First, they shot a pilot with a camcorder using their apartments as sets, but TV networks either passed on the idea or wanted to water down its creativity. Finally, however, FX greenlit seven initial episodes and shifted the premise to McElhenney's native Philadelphia, where they shot exteriors. With a limited budget, they cast themselves as three of the central foursome, with McElhenney playing Mac, the ever-randy macho pseudo-reactionary one; Howerton as Dennis, the vain semi-sophisticated but ultimately vapid one; and Day as Charlie, their dimwitted borderline illiterate janitor, and punching bag. Kaitlin Olson, a veteran of LA's famed Groundlings comedy troupe, was brought on to play Dennis's sister Dee, collectively called The Gang.
