Richard Saul Wurman Biography

Richard Saul Wurman is a prolific writer, designer, and publisher, having authored over 80 books on diverse topics. Some of his notable works include "The Notebooks and Drawings of Louis I. Kahn" (1963) and "What Will Be Has Always Been" (1986), a seminal collection of the words Kahn. He has also written several books on healthcare and the Access travel series. Wurman holds M. Arch. & B. Arch. Degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with the highest honors in 1959 and was awarded the Arthur Spayed Brooks Gold Medal. He has received honorary doctorates, Graham Fellowships, a Guggenheim, and numerous National Endowment for the Arts grants. In addition, Wurman is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the Annual Gold Medal from Trinity College Dublin, a Gold Medal from AIGA, and the Bradford Washburn Award from the Boston Science Museum. He is also a Fellow of the AIA and in the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame. Wurman's major cartographic project, the Urban Observatory, in partnership with ESRI and Radical Media, opened in February 2015 at the restored Smithsonian Castle on the Mall in Washington, DC.
