Richard Louv Biography
Richard Louv is a journalist and the author of ten books, including Our Wild Calling: How Connecting With Animals Can Transform Our Lives - And Save Theirs, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, The Nature Principle: Reconnecting with Life in a Virtual Age, and Vitamin N: The Essential Guide to a Nature-Rich Life: 500 Ways to Enrich Your Family's Health and Happiness. His works have been translated and published in 24 countries, and they have aided in the development of an international movement to link children, families, and communities to the environment. He is the co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Children & Nature Network, which is assisting in the movement's growth. He has been on the Today Show, CBS Evening News, and NPR's Fresh Air, among other major radio and television shows. He gives talks all over the world about the nature-deficit disorder, a concept he first introduced in the Last Child in the Woods; the importance of children's and adults' exposure to nature for their health; and the need for environmental protection and preservation for greater access to nature and the Earth's wellbeing. He's spoken at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference, the USC Institute for Integrative Health Conference, the very first White House Summit on Environmental Education, the Congress of the New Urbanism, the International Healthy Parks Conference in Melbourne, Australia, and the national Friends of Nature Conference in Beijing, China, among other venues. He received the national Audubon Medal in 2008, following in the footsteps of Rachel Carson, E.O. Wilson, and President Jimmy Carter. He has also received the San Diego Zoological Society Conservation Medal, the Chicago Zoological Society's George B. Rabb Conservation Medal, the International Making Cities Livable Jane Jacobs Award, and Clemson University's Cox Award for "continued accomplishment in the social sector." He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the NewSchool of Architecture & Design in 2018. Louv has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Times of London, Orion, Outside, and other publications as a writer and pundit. He wrote for The San Diego Union-Tribune and Parents magazine as a writer. Louv has worked as a visiting scholar at Clemson University and the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. He is a member of the Ecopsychology journal's editorial board. He is an honorary co-chair of Canada's Child in Nature Alliance with artist Robert Bateman. He is also a member of the Biophilic Cities and the International Association of Nature Pedagogy advisory boards. He is the father of two young sons, Jason and Matthew, and is married to Kathy Frederick Louv. He prefers hiking to write.
