Rev. Peter Gomes Biography

The Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in The Memorial Church, the Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes, is a member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Divinity at Harvard University. He holds degrees from Bates College (AB 1965) and Harvard Divinity School (STB 1968) and has received 27 honorary degrees. In 2001, Harvard University awarded him The Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Award. In addition, he is an Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College and the University of Cambridge, England, where The Gomes Lectureship has been established in his name. Revered as one of America's most distinguished preachers, Reverend Professor Gomes has delivered lectures and sermons throughout the United States and the British Isles, including the John F. Kennedy School of Government Leadership Conference in 2004, and as Lecturer at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia, in 2003. In 2002, he served as Hein Fry Lecturer for the Evangelical Lutheran Seminaries in the United States. In 2000 he delivered The University Sermon before the University of Cambridge, England. He preached The Millennial Sermon in Canterbury Cathedral, England. In 1998, he presented The Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching at Yale Divinity School.
