Regina Benjamin Biography

The 18th Surgeon General of the United States is Regina M. Benjamin, MD. As America's Doctor, she gave the populace the most up-to-date scientific knowledge on how to enhance both their own and the country's health. Dr. Benjamin was also in charge of the 6,500 uniformed public health officers who serve all over the world to advance and defend American citizens' health. She also held the position of head of the National Prevention Council, a group of 17 federal institutions with cabinet status that created the National Prevention Strategy, a road map for the country's health. Dr. Benjamin has forged a career that has been honored by a wide range of organizations and publications, beginning with her early days as the founder of a rural health clinic in Alabama, which she kept open despite the damage caused by hurricanes George and Katrina, as well as a devastating fire. She has also played a leadership role in the global advancement of preventive healthcare. Dr. Benjamin is a former head of the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States and the former associate dean for rural health at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She was the first doctor under 40 and the first woman of color elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association in 1995. She also held the position of head of the AMA Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs and president of the American Medical Association Education and Research Foundation. She gained the head of the Medical Association State of Alabama in 2002, becoming the first African-American woman to hold that position in the country. Dr. Benjamin is a member of the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences' division for health, which was established in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. She was selected as a Rockefeller Next Generation Leader and a Kellogg National Fellow in addition to becoming a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Benjamin holds an MBA from Tulane University, a BS in chemistry from Xavier University, and an MD from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Her residency in family medicine was conducted in Macon, Georgia, where she attended Morehouse School of Medicine.
