Red Cashion Biography

Mason L. Red Cashion is a former football official in the United States. He began officiating in 1952 as a student at Texas A&M University and went on to work for a number of high schools and collegiate football leagues, including the Southwest Conference. He worked as a referee in the National Football League from 1972 to 1997, including Super Bowl XX and Super Bowl XXX. Cashion started his career as a line judge in 1972 and was elevated to referee in 1976 after long-time referee Norm Schachter retired. For most of his career, he wore uniform number 43. He wore number 8 during the 1979-1981 seasons when officials were numbered independently by position rather than having a single number issued to each official. Cashion's famous first down call, in which he would gleefully drawl the First dowwwwwn! out to the crowd, is well-known among NFL players, coaches, and fans. I don't know of any period that started it or halted it, he stated in a 1997 interview with The Sporting News. It was just something that developed through time and has been in place ever since. Cashion's rise to referee occurred just one season after the NFL began supplying officials with wireless microphones to clarify penalty decisions and difficult judgments to stadium spectators, media members, and home viewers. In 1999, Cashion was honored by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. He has provided the voice of the referee in many Madden NFL video game editions.
