Rebecca Makkai Biography

Rebecca Makkai is an American author and educator. She was born in California and grew up in Lake Bluff, Illinois. Makkai studied at Washington and Lee University and received her MA in Humanities from Middlebury College. She has written several novels, including "The Great Believers," a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2019, and "The Borrower," a Booklist Top Ten Debut and an Indie Next pick. Makkai's work has also appeared in publications such as Harper's, Tin House, and Ploughshares. It has been selected for inclusion in The Best American Short Stories anthology. She has taught at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Tin House Writers' Conference, and Northwestern University. Makkai lives in Chicago with her husband and two daughters.
