Ras Baraka is an American politician currently serving as the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. He is the son of the late poet and activist Amiri Baraka. Ras Baraka attended Howard University and later earned a master's degree in education from St. Peter's University. Before his political career, Baraka worked as a high school principal and educator in the Newark public school system. He served as the Deputy Mayor of Newark from 2002 to 2013 before being elected Mayor in 2014. As Mayor, Baraka has focused on community policing, improving education, creating jobs, and reducing crime. Baraka has been recognized for promoting social justice and fighting for equality. He is a National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials member and has been honored by organizations such as the National Action Network and the NAACP.
