Randy Barnes is a former shot putter from the United States who now owns both the outdoor and indoor world records for the sport. At the 1988 Olympics, he earned silver, and at the 1996 Olympics, he won gold. Both of Barnes' records are still valid as of 2015. In the previous ten years, just one thrower has come within 60 cm (2 ft) of the outdoor record. Barnes claimed the gold medal that had evaded him for the previous eight years at the 1996 Olympic Games with a come-from-behind 21.62 m throw on his last try. He tested positive for androstenedione, an over-the-counter substance popularised by Mark McGwire and forbidden in track and field, in 1998. Barnes was barred from competition for life, despite his assertion that he was unaware of the androstane restriction.
