Rae Armantrout Biography

Rae Armantrout is an American poet and professor of writing at the University of California, San Diego. Armantrout received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master’s from San Francisco State University. Armantrout’s poetry is known for its attention to language and its use of short, often fragmented lines. She has published numerous collections of poetry, including “Versed,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2010, “Money Shot,” and “Wobble.” Armantrout has also received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the California Arts Council. In addition to her writing, Armantrout has taught at universities across the United States, including the University of California, San Diego, where she has been a writing professor since 1987. She has also served as a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.
