Rachel Sklar Biography

Based in New York, Entrepreneur and writer, Rachel Sklar is the co-founder of TheLi.st, a network & media platform for awesome women and Change The Ratio, which helps to increase the opportunity and visibility for women in tech & new media. She was a founding editor at the Huffington Post and Mediaite and also writes about culture, media, politics and technology as a former lawyer. She has written for numerous recognized publications such as Politico, Mashable, Medium, Mother Jones, Glamour, Elle, Marie Claire, New York Times, Newsweek/Daily Beast, and co-created and hosted the first Daily Beast video interview show. The book titled A Stroke of Luck: Life, Crisis and Rebirth of a Stroke Survivor (1998) was written by her and has contributed to several anthologies, including Camp Camp: Where Fantasy Island Meets Lord of the Flies (2007), This Is Why You’re Fat (2009), My Parents Were Awesome (2011), TheLi.st’s The 10 Habits of Highly Successful Women (2014), and She co-edits TheLi.st @ Medium, a collection of current writing by and about superstar women. Rachel gives talks at events, conferences, and on TV if you check the local listings, she is the co-host of “The Salon on The Jewish Channel. She acts an advisor to many startups, such as Lover.ly, DonorsChoose, TeachAIDS.org, She’s The First, Vox Media and The Daily Muse. She is also a prestigious member of TED & Summit communities, the Reboot, and the Lean In launch team. Rachel is also the founder of a social enterprise, facilitating group giving around events known as Charitini, and an all-women comedy initiative called CTRComedy which increased the number of women performing comedy in 2011 and 2012 at SXSW. She’s a recognized lyricist who has performed comedy and musical comedy shows at Sixth & I, Caroline’s, UCB, 54 Below, Joe’s Pub, the 92nd St. Y (uptown and downtown!) and other smaller venues around NY. In 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2013, Rachel was named to Silicon Alley 100, Forbes’ “Women Changing The World,” FastCompany’s “League of Extraordinary Women,” Marie Claire’s New Guard, JWA’s “Making Trouble, Making History” award, and has bagged many awards for her writing, including two People’s Choice Mirror awards and multiple Mirror Award nominations. The #changetheratio hashtag was named one of Forbes’ Viral Hits for Empowering Women & Girls in 2014. TheLi.st won a grant from the Knight Foundation in 2012 and she was profiled along with TheLi.st by the New York Times in 2013.
