Thomas Lauderdale was engaged in politics in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, in 1994, with the intention of running for mayor one day. He attended every political fundraiser under the sun, like other eager politicians-in-training, but was disappointed to find the music at these gatherings boring, uninspired, noisy, and un-neighborly. He founded the little orchestra Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers, drawing inspiration from music from all over the world and crossing genres of classical, jazz, and old-fashioned pop in the hopes of appealing to conservatives and liberals alike. Pink Martini's multilingual repertoire is performed on concert stages and with symphony orchestras across Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, South America, and North America by a group of 10-12 musicians. Pink Martini had its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, and its symphonic debut with Norman Leyden's Oregon Symphony in 1998. Since then, the band has performed with over 50 orchestras across the world, including several appearances at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, and the San Francisco Symphony.
