Thomas Lauderdale was engaged in politics in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, in 1994, with the intention of running for mayor one day. He attended every political fundraiser under the sun, like other eager politicians-in-training, but was disappointed to find the music at these gatherings boring, uninspired, noisy, and un-neighborly.
He founded the little orchestra Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers, drawing inspiration from music from all over the world and crossing genres of classical, jazz, and old-fashioned pop in the hopes of appealing to conservatives and liberals alike.
