Peter Tyack Biography

Peter Tyack is a marine biologist and an animal behavior and bioacoustics expert. He is a Senior Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a Visiting Professor at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Tyack received his Ph.D. in biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1983, where he researched the vocal behavior of marine mammals. He joined the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1984, where he established the Marine Mammal Behavioral Ecology Group to study the behavior and vocal communication of whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Tyack has researched a wide range of marine mammal species and authored over 100 scientific papers and book chapters. His research has contributed to understanding marine mammal behavior, including vocal communication, social structure, and feeding behavior. Tyack has also played a leading role in developing passive acoustic monitoring to study marine mammals, including acoustic sensors to track whales and dolphins. He has served on numerous advisory panels and committees on marine mammal research and conservation, including the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Marine Mammal Commission. Tyack has also worked to promote public awareness of marine mammal conservation issues through public talks, documentaries, and educational programs. In recognition of his contributions to marine mammal research and conservation, Tyack has received numerous awards, including the John M. Phillips Award for Conservation Merit from the Society for Marine Mammalogy and the Ocean Champion Award from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
