Pema Chodron Biography

Pema Chodron (about-Pema) is a Tibetan Buddhist nun who lives in the United States. Deirdre Blomfield-Brown, Pema Chodron's mother, was born in New York City in 1936. She graduated from the University of California in Berkeley after attending Miss Porter's School in Connecticut. She spent several years as an elementary school teacher in both New Mexico and California. Pema is the mother of two children and the grandmother of three grandkids. Pema moved to the French Alps in her mid-thirties and met Lama Chime Rinpoche, with whom she studied for several years. In 1974, while studying in London under Lama Chime, she became a novice nun. His Holiness is a saint. Pema was ordained by the Sixteenth Karmapa, who was visiting England at the time. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Pema's root teacher, first met her in 1972. Lama Chime urged her to engage with Rinpoche, and she studied with him from 1974 until his death in 1987, and it was with him that she formed her most significant bond. She earned full monastic ordination in the Chinese lineage of Buddhism in Hong Kong in 1981, at the invitation of the Sixteenth Karmapa. Pema was the director of Karma Dzong in Boulder until 1984 when she moved to Gampo Abbey in rural Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche requested that she endeavor to build a monastery for western monks and nuns. Pema now teaches throughout the United States and Canada, and she intends to spend more time in solitary retreat under Venerable Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche's tutelage. Pema is passionate about assisting in the establishment of the monastic tradition in the West, as well as continuing her engagement with Buddhists of all traditions to share ideas and teachings. She is the author of numerous works, including "The Wisdom of No Escape," "Start Where You Are," "When Things Fall Apart," "The Places That Scare You," "No Time to Lose," and "Practicing Peace in Times of War," as well as "Smile at Fear."
